Happy Birthday Bug

Yesterday was my Shalebug's sixth birthday. Which had me and the kids wondering, do they celebrate birthdays in heaven?

We decided that yes, they do, and we should too. So we bundled up and collected a few of our favorite nephews and headed to the movies.

Me and a group of monkeys kids, alone in a dark room with no adult supervision. It was a small miracle that no one was arrested, injured or found rocking in the corner with her arms wrapped around her body, muttering "What have I done???" over and over again.

If you ignore the fact that I spent more money on popcorn, Gobstoppers and soda than I did on groceries for my family, it was a pretty successful outing. One that I hope to repeat, say in a year, when time has blurred the images and my memory has receded.

But as I corralled my herd of six to ten year olds and tried to keep them from breaking bones or running into traffic on the way to the theatre, I wondered what my Bug was doing.

Was he dancing on healed and straightened feet?

Was he singing with the angels, finally able to find his voice that for so long had remained silent?

Was he laughing his ass off at the antics of his siblings and cousins while his mother tried to pretend she didn't know those crazy children in the movie theatre?

Was he thinking of me, the way I was thinking of him?

Happy birthday my beautiful boy, my moonbeam, my Bug. For four years, ten months, 17 days and 21 hours you were the light that lit my soul and shone upon this family. And now we have the blessings of remembering that light, that love even if we couldn't reach out and touch you and be slimed by your kisses.

You still light up this family. You just do it in a different, slime free way.

We haven't forgotten. I hope you haven't either.

I was thinking of you yesterday. I thought I had remembered reading that it was Bug's birthday. Just know that someone all the way in Ohio is thinking of you all.

Oh, and I think that they do celebrate birthdays in Heaven. Any excuse for cake! And his smile? Bright as the sun!

He's up there looking down saying in a beautiful voice....

"Mommy are you crazy?? 10 KIDS??"

Then he laughs.... dances around... does a few cartwheels... and blows you down some kisses.

Happy Birthday Bug!

He is probably too busy fending off the lay-deez. Ain't easy for a pimp up in there.

This was beautiful. Really.

And any remaining doubts I had as to your sanity are now gone--I KNOW you're crazy. TEN??? Nuts.

I celebrate my mother's birthday with the kids and DAve and although it doesn't take away the sting, it helps take the edge off, you know?

Happy Birthday to your Shalebug. And sending thoughts to you, too...

He was most definitely celebrating in heaven. It doesn't make sense that he wouldn't...

And dang, you're a brave woman. I don't think I ever tried to wrangle more than 5 kids at a time, and even then I took them to places I didn't have to make sure they really behaved...

Happy (belated) birthday, Shalebug.

T, I'm new here, I hopped over from HBM. I spent a couple hours last night reading at your older blog. I'm sure your sweet little Bug is having quite the wonderful time up there. Everyone knows heaven has the best parties...that is why people describe things like cake as "heavenly". :)

I bet Shalebug and his grandpa were running freely and enjoying the best cake ever! I bet he looked down from heaven and sent his love down to you and his daddy and his siblings and wanted you to know that he's ok and he will see you all in due time.

Happy Birthday Shalebug! We love you. And we love you too T!

I still come here to check in now and again, just not as much as before, at the begininng of your journey into the blogging world. I'm sorry I missed this.

I see that you are doing very well and I'm so happy for you. I know as well as you how hard it is to lose a son and I also know that being funny and sarcastic to help balance that can be a girl's best friend. I don the same characteristics. The very same.

I'm glad that you and your kids/neices/nephews chose to celebrate in such a fun and wonderful way. We too believe they celebrate birthdays in Heaven, my Oldest son asks those kinds of questions all the time.

I'll be checking in more and I hope you continue down this road. I find that I am constantly looking for the reason but then again, I know, in this life, I'll never find it. Crazy how you can really beat yourself up; isn't it?

Be well and it's good to read you again.
